About us

Hi! I’m Maya Musgrave.

I started this non-profit because my junior year in high school in Northwest Michigan I found out I had very low iron, specifically the type of iron called serum-ferritin. My levels were so low that I had to have two infusions. I thought I was doing everything right, I ate well, I slept well, I took a multi-vitamin every day. Without a blood test, I would have never known why I was so tired and so slow. Most athletes only have a yearly sports physical that doesn’t routinely test blood markers.

My hope is that I can help prevent other athletes from ever getting to such a low level. I started with my own cross country team and got every female team member tested. It turned out that HALF my team had low iron.

An amazing company, Athlete Blood Test, reached out to me to help facilitate easy testing anywhere in the United States and easy to understand results specific to athletes. They are offering their services at cost and I am raising money through Know if You’re Low to pay for these tests for anyone who doesn’t have access to funds. Through an incredible donation from a group called 100 Women Who Care, we have funds to cover at zero cost any athlete, female or male, living in Benzie County. I am also working to create local chapters of Know If You’re Low, so if you’d like to be an ambassador, please reach out! I am still running cross country and track in college at DePauw University, but I’m still passionate about helping every high school athlete never go through having low serum-ferritin.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help athletes understand the importance of knowing their serum ferritin levels,

to make sure that cost does not stand in the way of any athlete getting tested

and to encourage athletes to help other athletes by sharing information and starting Know if You're Low chapters nationwide.

Educate

Your own doctor is your first best resource if you are concerned about your iron levels. Not all doctors know about the specifics of low iron in athletes. Know If You’re Low has teamed up with a company called Athlete Blood Test. Since 2007, Athlete Blood Test has been the leader in individualized, athlete-focused blood analysis to help athletes improve their nutrition, training, and recovery—and ultimately their performance in and enjoyment of their sport.

Test

The mission of our program is to not let cost stand in the way of any athlete understanding their own body. We are proud to work with a phenomenal organization, Athlete Blood Test, who have offered to significantly reduce the cost of testing for any teen athlete interested in Know If You’re Low. Simply click here to find out how to apply. Once you enter the password, ABT will email you a lab order and instructions on how to set up an appointment at a local testing site. All results will be delivered to a secure portal.

It all begins with an idea. One coach tells one athlete who tells one teammate who tells one friend. Our goal is to encourage athletes to help other athletes on the same team or even on rival teams by sharing information about low iron. You can also start a Know if You’re Low chapter at your school. Please reach out so we can help you. Low iron affects more than athletic performance. Make a difference! Click here to find out more about becoming a Know If You’re Low ambassador.
